Teaching Students with Exceptionalities in the Regular Classroom, Grades K-12

This course focuses on the unique characteristics, strengths and needs of students with exceptionalities, including learning disabilities, mental retardation, autism, blindness, deafness, traumatic brain injury, emotional/behavioral disorders, and giftedness. It emphasizes understanding of how various teaching strategies, materials, modifications and accommodations can assist students with exceptionalities to function and succeed in the regular classroom. 

Course participants will be able to identify the unique characteristics presented by students with the disabilities discussed, in terms of learning styles and educational, social and emotional needs. 

Participants will be able to identify teaching strategies, materials, modifications and accommodations that can assist students with exceptionalities to function and succeed in the regular classroom.

There will be an emphasis placed on universal design, both what it is, how it is accomplished, and the advantages it offers. 

Participants will understand and be able to discuss Federal and Maine special education laws, eligibility criteria for special education services, the concept and implementation of inclusion, and how to foster/support parental involvement.

This course is has been approved by the State Certification Office to meet the semester hours requirement in "teaching exceptional students in the regular classroom." The cost for this course is $750 and two follow-up days will be held on Monday and Tuesday, June 30 nd July 1, 2008.
