Mentoring for Novice Teachers, Grades K-12
Instructors: Frances Hitchens and Maureen Goering
University of Southern Maine Professor Frances Hitchens and York teacher Maureen Goering will co-teach a course designed to provide participants with an understanding of the needs of beginning teachers and the role of the mentor/coach in addressing these needs. Participants will also enhance listening and questioning skills that promote reflection. Teachers will learn and practice the coaching cycle and use Maine's Teaching Standards in coaching. Data gathering techniques that can be used during classroom observation will be presented. This course will increase teachers' understanding of how objective observation and non-judgmental feedback can provide a framework for teacher decision making and develop a shared understanding of the benefits of objective data gathering for both mentor and beginning teacher.
