Using GIS to Teach Spatial Literacy, Grades K-12
Instructors: Charlie Ek and Terry Martin
Whether your students are learning environmental science, history, geography, social studies, mathematics or art, a geographic information system ("GIS") can help them achieve spatial literacy. Spatial literacy is understanding spatial relationships, knowing how geographic space is represented, and the ability to reason and make key decisions about spatial concepts. It cuts across disciplines, enabling students to see relationships among data and concepts in new ways. This four-day course will introduce you to the theory and practice of spatial literacy in the classroom, using GIS application software, GPS receivers, and related software like Google Earth. You will use these tools during the class to design lesson plans for your own classroom needs. The course is suitable for teachers in grades 4-12.
