Building Comprehension and Vocabulary - Helping Students Read So They "Get It", Grades 2-8

This course will focus on strategies and activities for strengthening students' reading comprehension. We will consider a variety of types of texts and genres - fictional and informational, picture books, chapter books, articles, and electronic texts - focusing on what teachers and students can do to improve understanding. Vocabulary instruction that leaves behind the old lists and weekly tests will be included as an integral part of supporting comprehension. The whole point of reading is to comprehend. This course will emphasize the need for students to be actively involved when they sit down to read - so when they finish reading, they "get it."
